Discuss the problem of belief in God in the face of evil as dealt with by Dostoevsky, Hick, Johnson and Rowe. You dont have to discuss all four of these thinkers, but I think you should (at some point) incorporate some kind of discussion of Hick since hes the only one of these three writers who is offering a “theodicy” in the full sense – that is, an argument for why it is rational to believe in an omnipotent, all-good God in a world where evil exists. What do you think of Ivans (in Dostoevskys novel) decision to “return the ticket” to heaven? Does he seem to have good reasons for doing so? Do you think that its fair for Ivan (and correspondingly, Dostoevsky) to require there be some kind of eternal harmony which would compensate for the (seemingly unjust) suffering in the world? Looking at the main components of Hickss theodicy – do you think they adequately answer the “problem of evil”? Should we consider moral evil and natural evil separately, and if so, is Hick more convincing when dealing with one as opposed to the other? What counter-arguments might Johnson – or Rowe for that matter – use against Hick? We can observe that Hick doesnt seem to require his theodicy to prove as much as his critics (such as Johnson or Rowe) would want it to. Do you think the observations and considerations Hick points to are enough of a basis on which to rationally sustain belief in an omnibenevolent, omnipotent God in a world where evil exists? What do you think of Rowes argument for atheism based on the problem of evil? At one point Rowe outlines what he thinks would be the best strategy for a theist to advance their argument – do you think he gives good advice here? What do you think of his “friendly atheism”?
