For this assignment you will use Microsoft PowerPoint to create a presentation about a place to which you have traveled or would like to travel.
Begin by opening a new Microsoft PowerPoint file. Save it as LastnameFirstInitial_M5_A1.ppt. The presentation should include at least six slides that could describe the location, the method of travel, the qualities of the location that make it interesting or fun, the places you can visit, and any cultural activities in which you might like to participate. Choose an appropriate theme, slide layouts, and pictures to format the presentation attractively. Research the location and include properly cited (APA Style) material. Add (copy and paste) a chart or graph you can create in Microsoft Excel. This could be a travel budget. Add (copy and paste) a table you can create in Microsoft Word. This could be a daily schedule. Include a References slide at the end.

The Microsoft PowerPoint presentation appears virtually everywhere people gather—from the corporate boardroom, to the classroom, to military briefings. For presenters, it can be a great tool for showing visuals of the key points of a message to an audience (and diverting some attention away from themselves if they are not comfortable in front of people). For the audience, it provides another opportunity to retain information—not only hearing the speaker but also seeing the main points of the message. A poorly designed presentation, on the other hand, can be a distraction and annoyance to an audience. As with any visual aid, basic design principles are essential.
Consider your audience. Will the presentation be distributed to people to view individually on a PC or will it be presented to hundreds in a large hall? Are they fifth graders or executives? These factors weigh into the theme you choose, the graphics you use and the size and amount of text you put on the screen. Include a compelling title screen. In a conference setting, the title screen may stay projected for a long time before the presentation begins so make it appealing. Include the title of the presentation and perhaps a line describing in more detail what is to be covered. The name of the presenter may also be included or the organization’s logo if appropriate. The background may be different from the rest of the slides but be sure it uses colors that are harmonious.
Choose a typeface. Use one or two fonts, maximum. Any necessary variation for creating your visual hierarchy can be done with size, italics or bold. Be consistent with headings and body text from page to page. Be sure to choose a color for your text that contrasts with the background to ensure visibility. Do not use all capitals or all lower-case letters.
Keep it simple. Throwing too much information up on the screen is a quick way to lose your audience. Use no more than 5 bullet points per screen. Bullets should consist of words or phrases, not paragraphs. It can be helpful to display one bullet at a time to keep the audience from reading ahead and missing details the speaker is providing. If more details are necessary, use the notes feature and provide handouts rather than crowding each slide. Graphs and charts should be as basic and easy to comprehend as possible.
Limit animations and transitions. Animations are movements you can add to specific objects on a slide, such as adding bullet points. Transitions happen when you click to the next slide. If you ever sat through a presentation in which the speaker used every animation and transition available from the animations ribbon, you know why this is a good rule. Pick a transition that is not distracting. You may want to select an alternate animation or transition for a specific purpose. For example, you might use a horizontal wipe to go from one topic screen to the next but use a vertical wipe to signal that you are drilling down to more details for a specific topic.
