22 Jun HOW DO THEIR RELATIONSHIPS DIFFER OR MIRROR ONE ANOTHER?
Research Paper Guidelines
1. Check the Syllabus, Pg. 2 for all deadline. There are several throughout the semester for the various parts of the paper (discussed in the link named Research Paper Components).
2. Research papers will have a body of eight to ten (8-10) pages. The paper must also have an outline and Works Cited pages (These pages are NOT considered as part of the body page count.). You will find a sample research paper, including a sample Works Cited page in Chapter 16 of The St. Martin’s Handbook. Information about formal outlines is in Chapter 3. The order of pages in the paper is outline, body of paper, works cited. These are all to be saved and sent to me as one document.
3. Use quotations sparingly—no more than 25% of your paper should come from the SEVEN required LITERARY sources. Cite or paraphrase these quotations correctly!
· Quotes do not stand alone. They must be woven into the text using introductory phrases or tag lines. Your literature and grammar books both give examples of citing in MLA format; there is also information under Instructor’s Notes in Bb.
· Remember: the research paper is a critical analysis, not a list of quotations, not a plot summary, and NOT a biography. I am interested in YOUR thoughts on the author’s work. Your voice controls the paper.
· Extensive quotes should either be paraphrased or used in block format.
· When using previously quoted information inside of a quote in your own paper, change the original quotations marks to single quote marks and continue to “use your ‘own’ double quotations.”< /span>
· If you are quoting from a work and you need to make reasonable changes to the information (changes in capitalization, tense, and clarification of pronoun references are considered reasonable), use brackets to show those [c]hanges. You cannot change the intent of an author’s words. The kinds of changes referred to here are only used to ease reading or to comply with grammar/mechanics rules.
· All quotes and paraphrases MUST use parenthetical references. Make sure that the author’s name in the parentheses matches the entry on the Works Cited Page; if there is no author for a particular work, make sure the first important word of the title is used and that the word used is appropriately punctuated. For internet sources, use (n. pag.) in place of page numbers. Internet sources do not have page numbers—printed page numbers do no count as different printers may print varying amount of text on a page.
· Quotes or paraphrases DO NOT appear as a thesis or topic sentence.
· For additional information, read Quoting, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing under Instructor’s Notes and in your grammar/literature books. The information will help you not only with the research paper, but also with each writing assignment hereafter.
3. Reminder: research papers will be written in present tense and in third person, will not use contractions, and will avoid words like “sort of”, “kind of” and “probably” as they undermine your argument.4. Be sure to check for grammar, content, and citation errors before printing your final copy. For the final copy, apply any suggestions for revision made to the previously submitted assignments. Revision is NOT simply correcting grammar and spelling.
5. Late penalties will accrue at 10 points per day, weekends/holidays included.
6. Failure to turn in any part of the research paper on its individual due date throughout the semester will result in a deduction of points from the final grade.
7. In determining the research paper grade, the instructor will consider form, grammar, mechanics, content, and documentation.
9. Students are welcome email the instructor to discuss particular problems at any time. Students are also encouraged to post questions to each other regarding the research paper or format on the Discussion Board.
PLAGIARISM: Each student is responsible for constructing a research paper based on his/her own idea about a topic. Borrowed material must be scrupulously documented. Plagiarism is a serious offense and will result in an F in the course.
Components of the Research Paper
Throughout the semester, you will be asked to turn in various parts of the research paper so that I may plot your progress and help guide you in your efforts. Except for the draft, all other parts of the research paper will submitted to me via Messages. While these assignments will not be graded, timely submission of all parts will count toward your final grade on the research paper. The components include:
A. Proposed Topic
The proposal should be at least one well-developed paragraph stating which topic you have chosen and exactly how you will go about presenting that topic in your essay. Include specific details from the novel that you believe will be relevant for your argument (you must have read the novel BEFORE doing this assignment, but research of critical sources should NOT be done prior to this point). This assignment involves analytical thinking, not research at this point. Research comes later in the process as a way to support what you are already interested in. Researching first to choose someone else’s idea to regurgitate only results in frustration for the student (due to an overwhelming number of sources that you may encounter without having a narrowed idea first) and creates the temptation for plagiarism to occur. The idea that you shape must be your own.
Remember, the more specific you can be in your proposal, the more detailed information I can give you about keeping your research on track. As an example for a topic, you might decide to study characterization in A Farewell to Arms. From there, you would need to narrow down–just Catherine? Frederic? Rinaldi and Frederic? just the secondary characters? just the main characters? just the couples? OK, now say you decide to explore the couples in the novel. How do their relationships differ or mirror one another? Why are they necessary to the novel? ow do their relationships help, hinder, or reflect the novel’s progress? Answering these questions will bring you closer to a thesis that addresses characterization in some way specific to this novel and specifically regarding a so what point for your essay as a whole.
This assignment will be submitted in a Message on Bb.
