American Indian education is a form of education that was introduced in the 18th century in order to assimilate the American natives. The boarding institutions were phased out in the 1930’s by the Indian reorganization act of 1934, which funded local reservation day schools and revoked bans on the teaching of tribal history and culture. Despite this, assimilationist policy was at work on other fronts; it was declared policy of the United States to terminate the federal relationship with American Indian tribes and subject American Indians to U.S. federal and state laws, privileges and responsibilities. This basically was involved in education hence overrode the ACT.
Despite such organizations, the quality of education in these schools is low compared to other schools. These students tend to perform substantially worse than native students in public schools and public schools in general. The previous President of the U.S. Barack Obama attempts to better Native American education after his first visit as president of Indian Country in 2014. He proposed giving local tribes more control over education so that they can direct their children’s education and reform schools.
