For this discussion, name one of your own personal theories (that have been based on your own observations). Formulate a hypothesis that could be used for prediction. Make sure your variables have concrete, measurable operational definitions. Ask yourself, Are my operational definitions too broad? Can I make them more concrete?
Example: Ive observed over the years that people with pets seem nicer, they smile more, theyre in better shape, kids with pets get exposed to difficult concepts like kindness and death. From this set of observations, my theory is that pets are important for a good life. That is a broad theory however, not testable in its current format. I could derive many hypotheses from that theory that I could test. One might be “pet owners are happier than non-pet owners,” another could be “pet owners have lower stress than non-pet owners.” What makes these testable? Good operational definitions. How should you define pet ownership? All pets? (can you test all types of pet owners? Will all types of pet owners have similar stress levels, or will dog owners be different than cat owners, than fish owners, than pet-rock owners?) Get specific. In my hypothesis I choose to assess dog owners. Is this specific enough? Will all types of dogs owners go through the same amount of stress? Will Golden Retriever owners feel the same stress as Jack Russell Terrier owners? Will calmer older dogs provide the same experience as new puppies? Now you should see how important it is concretely define your variables. Now, try the same thing when operationally defining the other variable, stress.
