24 Jun EXPLAIN HOW LAWS SUCH AS THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT (ADA) AND THE IDEA INFLUENCE THESE DECISIONS.
Assignment 2: LASA 1—Analysis of Historical, Legal, and Ethical Issues
As someone knowledgeable about research on children with exceptionalities, you have been given the task of presenting a report to the court on your arguments for and against people with intellectual disabilities raising children.
Do the following:
• Launch the online library (under Academic Resources).
• Select Find Videos.
• Select Filmakers Library Online.
• In the search box, type “is love enough” and click Go.
• The first result should be Is Love Enough? directed by Tom Puchniak. Review this video.
Analyze the historical, legal, and ethical issues in the video. Make sure you include the following in your analysis (in an order that flows well in your paper):
• Compare the historical trends related to people with disabilities. How would outcomes be different fifty years ago for the people in the movie?
◦ Compare the differences from about ten years ago when the movie was produced to today.
◦ Explain how far we have come and what still needs to be addressed (such as terminology, acceptance, and support).
• Explain how laws such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the IDEA influence these decisions.
• Identify the ethical principles that might apply to the situation. Consider the professional ethics codes, including the following:
◦ American Psychological Association. (2010). Ethical principles of psychologists and code of conduct. Retrieved from http://www.apa.org/ethics/code/index.aspx
◦ American Counseling Association. (2005). ACA code of ethics. Alexandria, VA: Author. Retrieved from http://www.counseling.org/knowledge-center/ethics
• Synthesize your research and create two arguments: one for and one against parents with intellectual disabilities raising children. Consider the perspectives of the parents as well as the children. Use evidence and examples from research, utilizing your assigned readings, and at least two peer-reviewed articles on this topic to support your argument.
• Given what you learned in the video, your assigned readings, and research you found, recommend supports or interventions for the following:
◦ The family
◦ Within the community for the family and child
◦ The school
• Although this video focused on those with intellectual disabilities, generalize the issues to other exceptionalities.
• Conclude your paper with a review of current thinking for and against people with exceptionalities raising children, based on the sources used.
Write a 7–9-page paper (not counting the title page, abstract, or reference page) in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Be sure to include a title page, abstract, and reference page also in APA format. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M3_A2.doc.
By Week 3, Day 7, deliver your assignment to the M3: Assignment 2 Dropbox.

Assignment 1: Discussion—Multifaceted Assessment: Anne Marie’s Case
Many exceptionalities in children have a high comorbidity, which can make identification and intervention challenging for professionals. This is why, aside from legal and ethical requirements, multifaceted assessment is essential.
Review the following scenario:
Anne Marie is a thirteen-year-old girl who has always struggled socially and behaviorally. Although she has a few friends, she often argues with them, as well as with adults. Despite these challenges, she has always been successful academically, and so a formal evaluation was never conducted. However, Anne Marie’s parents are concerned that her behavior has become more pronounced this year and that she is spending even more time alone. Her parents are not sure if her problems are due to typical development (that is, puberty), a developmental disability such as an autism spectrum disorder, or an emotional disturbance.
Using the module readings, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, research multifaceted assessment.
Incorporate what you learned in your readings and respond to the following:
• Explain why it might be important to distinguish between typical development, developmental disability, and emotional disturbance for Anne Marie.
• Evaluate the roles each of the following would play in addressing Anne Marie’s challenges:
◦ Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) 2004
◦ Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)
◦ Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA)
• Identify any other information that might be important when assessing Anne Marie’s difficulties and designing an intervention for her. Discuss why this information would be important and how would you go about obtaining that information?
Write your initial response in 300–500 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.
By Week 3, Day 3, post your response to the appropriate Discussion Area. Through Week 3, Day 7, review and comment on at least two peers’ responses. Provide a statement of clarification, a point of view with rationale, challenge a point of discussion, or draw a relationship between one or more points of the discussion. The following are some possible discussion points:
• How might intervention differ depending on whether Anne Marie is experiencing typical development, developmental disability, or emotional disturbance?
• According to Piaget, Anne Marie is in which likely stage of development? What occurrence, during this stage, is important to consider in the context of an evaluation?
