Fifteen-year-old Justine lives in a run down, low-income apartment in Chicago. She developed asthma as a child and it has progressed into severe asthma in recent years. Her family consists of her mother and father (both smokers) and her brother Jack, a first grader. Her disabled grandmother also lives with the family; she has severe asthma. Her father works two jobs to make ends meet. Her mother recently lost her part-time job because of excessive absences to care for her mother and children. Justine has prescription medications to prevent asthma attacks. Justine takes these only when she experiences severe symptoms. After a recent attack, she was seen in the ER and hospitalized, returned home and was readmitted to the hospital 12 days later with pneumonia. The bacterial pneumonia was found to be antibiotic-resistant and as the disease progressed, she was placed on a respirator and moved to intensive care. Within a week, she died.
