26 Jun HOW CAN WE MAKE SENSE OF THE MANY COMPLEX FACTORS THAT MADE ELVIS FAMOUS AND WHO DESERVES ARTISTIC RECOGNITION FOR HIS FAME?
We have an image of a composer like Beethoven working alone in his room, scribbling on pages, but is this how American popular music developed?
As we explore the roots of musical styles, we can see that these styles have a complex musical and cultural lineage. Is this also true of individual songs? Is each song an unchanging creation or do songs change over time and performance? Are songs words and notes on a piece of paper or is a song more than that?
The answers to these questions are controversial as some of the readings for this discussion will reflect. Underlying this question are concerns about not only how the music industry is organized, but how a cultural product can develop and spread and bring meaning to people’s lives. We are in fact thinking about how creative ideas develop and innovations enter into the culture.

That’s a lot to think about, so let’s start with one song, one singer and manager and an example that is often given as a clear example of artistic plagiarism and exploitation. Let’s start with Elvis and his manager, Colonel Parker, known as the Colonel. Many believe that without the Colonel’s astute marketing, Elvis may not have become a star. However, the Colonel was known for affixing his signature to the copyright of Elvis’ tunes. By the end of his career as Elvis’s manager, he and Elvis had a 50/50 partnership in which the Colonel also earned a tremendous amount of money from merchandising. In the meantime, RCA had sole ownership to all of the royalties earned from Elvis recordings prior to 1973. We can also consider that several of the first songs Elvis recorded were covers of other artists, who could not break into the mainstream market because they were African American. For example, Arthur Crudup’s recorded his song “That’s All Right” in 1946. Elvis recorded it in 1954 and it became a hit, while Crudup received no royalties or recognition.
Let’s begin with the question: How can we make sense of the many complex factors that made Elvis famous and who deserves artistic recognition for his fame?
