The concept of one’s identity can be shaped in many ways. Essentially, there are two origins of influence on our identities – ‘given’ influences which are external, and ‘fabricated’ influences which are internal, created by us. Traditionally in literature the identity of the individual is something given and it can be used to explain action. The spy novel genre is an exception to this, and raises interesting ideas on the ways in which identity is created, both by the author and the character .
This is an example of a “given” identity, an image of someone based upon the expectations of others. For a spy, these expected identities come from several places. The first is the agency for whom the spy works, which expects a certain set of characteristics; physical, moral and loyalty . In the eyes of a separate body to yourself , one’s character is sensed entirely through one’s actions and responses, but also to a differing extent through the way of speech. The author, just like us, is limited in expressing his characters in written form by the language in which he communicates. Therefore the expression of a character’s identity in a novel, in which the only way of communication is written description, is primarily linked to the language used by him/her or by the author. So the use of language of the author becomes essential in defining identity.
