Biodiversity and Endangered Species. How does our impact effect the survival of other species, not to mentione ourselves? How can we sustainably co-exist? We can do this through being aware of our impact and planning that includes conservation and preservation.

Look up sustainability on the web on the USDA.gov or the DOE.gov. Also look up ‘ecological design’ and ‘permaculture’. Something else wise to consider are the development of ‘seed banks’. How does our imprint impact species? Check out the Endangered Species Act. It was passed in 1973. Did you know that the main protective agency for endangered, threatened and dwindling species in the USA is the United States Fish and Wildlife Service? You can see them athttp://www.fws.gov/ What agency in your community helps with endangered species? Do they offer programs to the public?

Land Planning Principles Applied
As you may imagine, most of the population lives in or near urban centers and/or near many coastlines. There are many problems from the growth of cities as most (not all) cities are not well planned with sustainability in mind.
Review the “Problems Associated with Unplanned Urban Growth.” Select three of the ten or so problem areas that concern your location (My location is El Paso Texas). Then, review the “Land Use Planning Principles”.
What environmental or ecological solutions do you see for the area in which you live? If your area has a specialized concern, feel free to explore that too. Try to incorporate some support for plants and animals and the preservation of other natural resources (treed areas, free unoccupied spaces, clean water areas, vs. the lack of water, air and soil purity), as you seek to formulate an informal plan or scenario to put in place the elements of restoration of your area.
You can visitEPA Greenkit or look up ‘sustainability’ for some additional ideas. These design ideas can be used in principle in most places. You can look up “green building” or “green builders”. Resources are widely available.
How much land should be left as untouched or set aside out of the whole, do you suppose? How much of a percentage would it take to allow for the system to regenerate itself? Did you know that nature does best to regenerate itself in undisturbed areas? We need to keep a good portion of our communities free from negative human impact. If you look at the ‘built’ environment where you live (the roads, housing, commence, congestion) and then look at the free and green spaces, you should have an idea what kind of sprawl is happening and the probable consequences.

Consider the wildlife in your region. Which wildlife species can you safely build a back yard habitat for?

What are the elements necessary for a wildlife habitat? Which habitat do you like and why?
Are there any reforestation projects, especially nice preserves for endangered or threatened species or botanical collections in your locale? If so what are they?
