Mills, describes the sociological imagination as,
“the capacity to shift from one perspective to another. . . It is the capacity to range from the most impersonal and remote transformations to the most intimate features of the human self and to see the relations between the two. . . It is by means of the sociological imagination that men now hope to grasp what is going on in the world, and to understand what is happening in themselves as minute points of the intersections of biography and history within society.”
He then describes a distinction between what he calls ‘the personal troubles of the milieu’ and ‘the public issues of social structure.’ This distinction is “an essential tool of the sociological imagination.”
This tool can be a very useful one for us because it allows us to see how individual behaviors and situations can be both personal problems and social issues. As well as that individual behaviors and situations can be created by a person and the society in which they are living.
Part One – Think of your own life. Practice using your sociological imagination by coming up with at least three examples that illustrate a “personal trouble of milieu” that you or someone you know intimately have encountered, and then analyze “the public issues of social structure” that are relevant to it. In other words, what are three of your personal problems? To what extent are these personal problems a result of something that you have created for yourself and to what extent are these problems socially created? The bulk of your discussion should focus on how society has influenced or caused your problems. Identify the link between “history” and “biography” – the link between the time and space in which you grew up and live and your personal experiences. Pay special attention to specific societal causes and agents that are related to your problems. Hint – use the social forces that we talked about (ideologies, structured pressures, groups, and social relationships). Talk about these social forces by name. Conclude with a comment on the effect of these problems on larger society.

Part Two – Define the “big three” theoretical perspectives in sociology: functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism. Apply the big three to your topics. Use all three theories to analyze each of your troubles.
