Antitrust issues related to sport are simply a part of the overall body of antitrust law. There are several laws whose application is specifically or practically limited to sport situations, but, otherwise antitrust activities in sport situations are no different than antitrust activities in other situations. In the traditional business situation, a business acquires raw materials, performs some operation to transform those raw materials into a product, and sells that finished product to a consumer. Antitrust laws prohibit certain combinations and cooperation in conducting those business activities. For instance, it may be a violation of antitrust laws for a business that buys raw materials and performs some operation to transform the raw materials to acquire the business that sells it the raw materials. This vertical integration can have the effect of reducing competition, and antitrust laws are designed to prohibit acts that have the effect of reducing competition. Although it may seem that professional sports leagues do not fit the traditional business situation, and, therefore, antitrust laws do not seem to apply, a little analysis shows that business and sport are similar enough that similar problems can arise. Sport leagues acquire talent from which they hope to produce winning teams.
