What is a comparison essay?
“The comparison and contrast of two stories, poems, or plays having one or more features in common may be an illuminating exercise because the similarities highlight the differences, or vice versa, and thus lead to a better understanding not only of both pieces but of literary processes in general. The works selected may be similar in plot but different in theme, similar in subject but different in tone, similar in theme but different in literary value, or, conversely, different in plot but similar in theme, different in subject but similar in tone, and so on. In writing such a paper, it is usually best to decide first whether the similarities or the differences are more significant, begin with a brief summary of the less significant, and then concentrate on the more significant” (Arp and Johnson 6).
Instructions: Choose two short stories from your assigned reading list with which to construct a comparison essay. Using the short stories as primary sources, write a literary analysis that adheres to MLA guidelines for formatting and documentation. This essay should be 700 900 words. You should document a minimum of three sources (including the two primary sources). Your secondary source must come from GALILEO. Please see the announcements section on ANGEL for the current GALILEO password. Be sure to include a works cited page at the end of your document. For instructions on MLA style in-text citations and works cited entries, see your Guide to MLA Documentation textbook. This essay should be typed in 12 point, Times New Roman font, and double-spaced throughout. Submit the final copy to the appropriate TurnItIn drop box on ANGEL.
Tips:
Primary Source: The source being analyzed (The short story of your choosing from the assigned reading list.)
Secondary Source: “…the examination of studies that other researchers have made of a subject” (Gibaldi 3).
An analysis is not a summary of the plot. Your grade will suffer greatly if you simply restate the plot of the story.
You may choose one of the topics below, or create one of your own. I highly suggest that you send me your topic idea for approval before you begin to write.
