Shoaff 1 Emily Shoaff Professor Rhonda April 1, 2019 English 1302 “Queenie” by Alice Munro Essay In the story of “Queenie,” by Alice Munro, Chrissy is introduced as our protagonist and our narrator. This story is told from the standpoint of Chrissy’s half sister, named Queenie. Queenie is described as a very beautiful girl who fails out of high school and gets married to Mr. Vorguilla, after caring for his sick wife who passed away. Chrissy immediately notices the life that Queenie is living with Mr. Vorguilla, and how hard it must be for her. Queenie being as beautiful as she is and being a likable person should not be struggling as hard as she is, I believe she got caught up with Mr. Vorguilla because of issues growing up with her parents, and in so many words, got stuck. Queenie failing out of high school was something that I know some people can not control, but personally I think she should have went back or attempted to get her GED. I believe education is extremely important, and letting that go has its downward affects. Marrying Mr. Vorguilla seems like at the time, was the only way out of where she was and a chance to have a different life, although it may not have been the life she imagined. Thinking about being in Queenie’s shoes, I wonder why she chose to live the way she did with a man like Mr. Vorguilla, instead of trying to get a job and worked on finding herself first. I believe alone time with yourself is healthy and helps work things out emotionally. Shoaff 2 Chrissy has noticed the abuse Queenie is enduring by being with Mr. Vorguilla, and how much he does not seem to really care about her. Queenie mentions dreams of running away from where she is to get away from Mr. Vorguilla, which I believe is the best thing she could do for herself due to the situation she is in. Although I am aware that leaving an abusive relationship is extremely hard for some women, it is still necessary and detrimental to living and to try to live a better and healthier life. In some ways, Chrissy is like a shoulder to cry on and a sweet escape for Queenie when she needs to get away from Mr. Vorguilla. She becomes someone for Queenie to open up to and talk to about things, and to allow Chrissy to give her a good point of view and to be a middle man on some issues. Chrissy eventually ends the story with Queenie leaving, and how she will not see her again for a while, but in little words, knows that she will still live beautifully as she has always tried to live her whole life, no matter what she endured. …
