In 1952, the partners wrote “Hound Dog” for blues singer Big Mama Thornton, [8] which became a hit for her in 1953. The 1956 Elvis Presley rock version, which was a takeoff of the adaptation that Presley picked up from Freddie Bell’s lounge act in Las Vegas,[9] was an even bigger hit. and the Leiber-Stoller song would be forever linked to Presley.
Leiber and Stoller’s later songs often had lyrics more appropriate for pop music, and their combination of rhythm and blues with pop lyrics revolutionized pop, rock and roll, and punk rock.
3 Give examples of the successes of Leiber and Stoller. Why were they successful?
Leiber and Stoller would also go on to build an impressive list of credits, including the monster hits “Jailhouse Rock” and “There Goes My Baby,” and they would carve out something of a specialty niche with gimmicky, half-serious songs like “Yakety Yak” and “Searchin’.” But “Hound Dog” wasn’t one of these. Whatever it eventually became, it was written as a conventional blues number. In the hands of Thornton, it was a thunderous and lyrically racy song about some no good hound dog of a man about to be kicked to the curb:
