An issue I see all too often, just about anywhere here in the States that I go, is homeless veterans. Homelessness is an epidemic here in America, and it’s especially disheartening to see it affecting some of our nations finest.
As of 2013, Delaware and Rhode Island were tied with the smallest percentage of homeless veteran, at less than 1% of the population, while California, Florida, New York, and Texas rang in with the highest percentages at over 6%, per state. Respectively speaking, Rhode Island and Delaware together had approximately 200 homeless veterans, while California, Florida, New York, and Texas collectively accounted for nearly 30,000. With the previous information in mind, there are multiple organizations dedicated to providing their resources and support to getting homeless veterans off the streets. Additionally, the VA has many programs as well, and while a lot of veterans feel a certain way about the VA, the resources are there if you’re able to navigate the proper channels.
Support Homeless Veterans, the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, the National Alliance to End Homelessness are only a few examples of all the great organizations and groups rallying behind our former military in their times of need.
In 2015, the President submitted as part of his budget plan for 2016, a plan to provide nearly $5.5 billion in homelessness assistance (United States Interagency Council on Homelessness, 2015).
In January 2014, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness estimated that from 2010 to 2014, there had been a 33% decrease in homelessness among veterans as a result of collective national efforts. (Shaw, 2015)
We as a nation are getting better about addressing this issue, however, there are more improvements to be made.

For starters, my parents both migrated from the Dominican Republic in the late 1970’s. Although i was born in America, i have a deep love for the caribbean island. Over the years, i’ve grown infatuated with the Dominican politics. I have definitely seen the good, bad and ugly. Additionally, i even lived and worked in the DR for about a year and have experienced both sides of the spectrum. The Dominican Republic is a country inhabited by 10,500,000 people. Rich in resources, the GDP last year was estimated at 67.10 billion dollars. Yet the national poverty headcount ratio is at 41%. How could a country that has such a large GDP, struggle to feed its people? This is my perspective on the matter.
Most of the presidential candidates in recent years, have promised to better the economical situation in the country. The candidates sworn into office often falter on these promises. Instead of hiring and placing the most qualified individuals to run sectors such as, education, agriculture and tourism to name a few, often times the positions are given to their financial supporters. It is done so openly in plain sight, that someone completely oblivious to whats going on in Dominican politics can see the level of corruption. From my own experiences, while working for the department of transportation i have experienced the corruption myself. In example, the government would pay a construction company to repave a highway. Lets say the repairs are estimated at 10 million dollars. In reality, the job would cost about 5 million. So what happens to the rest? Of course, the company hired is somehow connected to the individual who handed the contract. In essence, everyone in the hierarchy eats.
I understand every country has its problems. I just wish that countries such as the U.S. can involve itself a bit more in the Dominican politics. Not only is the Dominican Republic a major hub for drugs coming into the U.S., it is also a major trade partner. I know we could never fully win the war on drugs, but the U.S. should put a bit more pressure on the country to clean its act. With the corruption being so high, i wish the U.S. would intervene especially during the elections. Not to shift or influence the politics, but to help keep the integrity of the elections itself. The past elections have been so rigged, that ballot boxes have disappeared to work in favor of certain candidates.
