I feel that the mere explanation of terms and systems has helped me a great deal in my journey of having basic knowledge to have a foundation to build upon.
The exercise of the matching of terms and definitions in week 2 was very helpful. I plan on periodically reviewing these definitions to help build and reinforce my knowledge. Upon reading what the advanced practice nurse is expected to have as far as informatics skills, I feel that I have quite a bit to go, but I have to start somewhere. The six competencies for master’s prepared nurses as listed in week 4 lesson (AACN, 2012), are very helpful as a guideline on what I as a master’s prepared RN in the future need to work on. I feel the one that I am most comfortable with is the use of technology in the support of learning of myself and others, and the one that
I need the most work on is the analyzation of emerging and current technology because I am in the process of learning what the current technologies are and how they operate and relate to each other before I am able to analyze and apply them. According to Choi & De Martinis (2013), the identification of a nurse’s informatics competency needs is imperative in designing a learning plan either by nursing educators or for the nurse themselves to have a successful education plan so the importance of the TANIC assessment is germane to my learning of nursing informatics. The TANIC self assessment that we took at the beginning of the class reinforced my low confidence at the informatics skills, however, it helped identify that I need to enhance my skills greatly to catch up and be at a level that is satisfactory for the advanced practice nurse upon completion of this program. The computer systems are becoming more sophisticated and intricate in order to simplify our way of life. In the health care field, it is essential that health care workers have the ability to properly use a computer. It is also extremely imperative that health care workers also know how to properly operate the windows system or mac system in order to utilize databases and electronic health records. According to Sipes (2016), nurses must have a good understanding of the essential skills of nursing informatics (NI) in order for sufficient development of education and training programs to occur (p. 252).
The field of nursing bioinformatics helps to identify and manage data and wisdom in the nursing practice with the help of nursing science. The competency self-assessment tools in NI such as the TANIC self-assessment tool, “add clarity and specificity to better understand exactly what skills are required as awareness of project management (PM) skills become more evident” (Sipes, 2016, p. 254). In my opinion, the TIGER-based Assessment of Nursing Informatics Competencies (TANIC) self-assessment tool that we completed the first week of class changed the impression of my current level of informatics skills.
Since I have been using computers for quite some time now, I thought that I have been extremely proficient in the computer world. After sitting down and completing the TANIC self-assessment I really can’t say that I know how Dear properly carry out all of the computer skills mentioned nor do I know everything about computers. I still have a lot to learn and I feel that this class will help me to become more profiecient and competent in the field of computers and nursing informatics.
