Depression Response Essay GENERAL DESCRIPTION: In this project you are going to use photographs to explore the experience of the Great Depression in the 1930s. You will use the photographs as well as information from your textbook, lecture notes, Powerpoints and videos to describe the American experience during Great Depression. To accomplish this task you are going to need to analyze the visual sources and then write an essay in which you use BOTH the factual data you gather and your detailed analysis of the photographs to discuss the Depression. GUIDELINES FOR ANALYZING PHOTOGRAPHS: Steps to consider when analyzing a photograph: 1. Observation: Study the photograph for 2 minutes. Form an overall impression of the photograph and then examine individual items. 2. Next, divide the photo into quadrants and study each section to see what new details become visible. 3. Develop a chart listing the people, objects and activities in the photograph. 4. Based on what you have observed above, list three things you might infer from this photograph.
5. What questions does this photograph raise in your mind? Where could you find answers to them? 6. What does this photograph say to you about the conditions in America in the 1930s? KEY ISSUES: Use the following questions to develop broad ideas to discuss in the essay. DO NOT simply answer the questions. It is more important to use the details from the photographs to show what it was like to live during the Great Depression. 1) What are the causes of the Great Depression? What did they find? 4) How were different parts of the country affected? i.e. cities, industrial areas, the Great Plains, the West… 5) How did New Deal programs help Americans during the Great Depression? 6) How did Roosevelt’s programs change the nature of government involvement in the problems of everyday Americans?
