NRS328 Professional Nursing: Evidence-informed Practice
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
be able to evaluate the relationships between research, theory and evidence-based practice for nursing (aligns with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse: 2.6, 3.4, 9.2).
be able to apply the principles of ethical research and cultural competence in critically appraising research articles (NMBA 1.3, 2.1, 2.3, 3.1, 9.3, 9.5).
be able to describe the research process and explain its components (NMBA 4.1, 7.3, 10.4).
be able to critically evaluate research articles and their applicability to nursing practice (NMBA 2.2, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 3.1, 3.4, 3.5, 4.1, 5.1, 7.3, 9.4, 9.5, 10.2, 10.4).
Syllabus
The subject will cover the following topics:
Module 1: Introduction to Research. Origins of knowledge in nursing and the relationship of science, theory and research. Introduction to research methodology; quantitative and qualitative.
Module 2: Ethical and Cultural Considerations. Social justice and equity principles. Protecting the rights of individuals and groups. Apply legal and ethical frameworks to research.
Module 3: The Search Process. Use appropriate technologies to search for high-quality information for academic use. Apply concepts of academic research critique. Appraising guidelines for research.
Module 4: Introduction to Research Data and Analysis. Distinguish between research designs. Identify sections of a research article. Discuss reliability and validity. Explore sources of error.
Module 5: Applying Evidence to Practice. Utilisation of research findings in nursing practice. The role and application of evidence based practice in nursing. How to be a change agent.
