When asked my thoughts if theory plays a role in clinical practice I feel as if I don’t even have to hesitate to answer. Nursing theory is the framework of how Nurses’ practice clinically every day. As a nurse, I feel like nursing theory is the drawing board to always revert to and to build on.
While some may ask if nursing theory plays a role in clinical practice there are arguments on both sides. Nursing theory helps nurses provide a rationale behind the data the collect and the care they provide, which is essential for decision making. Nursing theory allows for the nursing profession to provide better quality care in practice. Before this class started if I was asked this question my answer would have been different because I did not have much education on nursing theory. Now that we as a class having been diving into theory I can answer with confidence and say nursing theory plays and important role in clinical practice. Nursing theory is important to guide the nursing profession on what they know and what they need to improve (Jacobson, 2017).
Nursing theory helps to build a common terminology among the nursing profession so there can be understood communication to improve quality of care (Jacobson, 2017). Theory can improve the quality of care nurses provide by the more nurses that purses higher education the more nurses that can implements these theories into practice. Continuing to implement theory in practice nurses can also maintain professional boundaries and hold each other accountable. Finally, they offer a systematic approach to identify questions for study, select variables, interpret findings, and validate nursing interventions (McEwen, 2014, p. 432). Understanding the obstacles and incentives for change is crucial for an effective intervention or innovation to be implemented successfully.
An understanding of the theoretical expectations and hypotheses behind these factors enables the consideration of theory-based interventions for quality improvement. For nursing theory to be relevant today it must be recognized as a continued development of a nursing discipline and body of knowledge that drives nursing practice and helps to put into place guidelines and protocols for nursing (Nickitas, 2015). Concepts in nursing theory help us to measure the patient’s outcomes in all different healthcare settings. Self-Care is very important because if the patient is unable to care for themselves they will continue to decline in health and that causes a burden on the already strained health care system that we have today.
