1.1 An overview of the BI concept
Business intelligence is a combination of tools, technologies and processes needed to create information from data and turn the information into knowledge, which is used to make plans that drive a profitable business action. Business intelligence constitutes a variety of elements including data warehousing, business analytics and knowledge management (Leat, 2007).
The interest to pursue this particular area has greatly increased due to the many opinions that have appeared suggesting that BI systems are a crucial component of a modern enterprise’s information structure as they in various ways lead to success and competitiveness advantage (Davenport, Harris, & Morison, 2010).
