Briefly describe the five different types of society, using the text. Would you prefer to grow up in a hunting and gathering society, a horticultural society, a pastoral society, or an early industrial society if forced to choose? Why? Discuss the following questions: If you were born into that particular society, what would you be doing with most of your time? Materially, would you be better off or worse off than you are today? Anthropologists and sociologists classify societies into six types, depending on the level of technological advancement of the society. In this paper, I will lay an extensive focus on five major types of societies. Hunting Society This type of society exists through hunting and gathering. This is one of the oldest societies. These societies are comprised of a few members, and they are known to be flexible. They used to move from areas where resources were scarce in other areas where they could find plentiful. These groups were made by members of the same tribe(Lenski,Nolan & Lenski, 1995). Pastoral Societies These societies emerged more than 10000 years ago. These societies depend on animals for food and transport. These societies are still in existence until today(Lenski,Nolan & Lenski, 1995). These communities are common in deserts and other areas where agricultural practice is not possible. These societies have a continuous supply of food since domesticating animals has assured food than hunting. Horticultural Societies These societies are different from the previous two societies. These societies engage in cultivating of vegetables and fruits. These societies also appeared a long time ago, and they were also mobile since they had to look for productive lands(Lenski,Nolan & Lenski, 1995). Agricultural Societies These societies apply technology in the cultivation. These societies engage in cultivating crops as well as rearing animals. These societies produced a surplus that…
was enough to promote trade, as well as enough food for the society. Industrial Societies These societies use machines and technology in the production processes. Industrial revolution is one of the factors that boosted these societies to a significant extent. I would prefer to live in an early industrial society. I would prefer this type of society since the society is more developed. The society does not rely on the traditional means of production. Its productivity is independent of natural factors such as climate, and thus this society is less likely to experience some of the hardships experienced by other societies(Lenski,Nolan & Lenski, 1995). Just like in other societies such as agriculture, where key activities are farming, in the industrial sector, the principal activities are manufacturing. If I were born in this type of society, I would be engaging myself in the manufacturing processes. My primary job would be located in some of the major industries. If I were born in this society, I would be better off than being today. The industrial sector is more predictable than the other sectors. The output is measured and easy to predict. As a result, my earnings would be higher, and thus I will be better off in terms of the material basis. I would be better off emotionally than Im today. I would have a better financial standing, and I will be in a society I like most; thus, I would be better off emotionally(Lenski,Nolan & Lenski, 1995). With the same genes, this society will change my way of life. I will be more modernized than am today. I wont think about the same things(Lenski,Nolan & Lenski, 1995). I would think and dream big. I would be more creative since I will be challenged by the situations at hand. I do not believe that I would think about the same things as I think today. I would be thinking about how I will come up with a new technique of production.
