Information System

Information System

As a group of three (3) promising consultants, you are going to conduct a system analysis and design of a functional area of a real business. The functional area could be sales/cash collection, purchase/cash disbursement, production, payroll, warehousing etc… The goal is to investigate the possibility of implementing an information system to address problems, opportunities and directives in that functional area. SUGGESTIONS

– The business under study should be a real entity. It could be a corner store or an existing organization. A fictitious business doesn’t provide much insight on the real world. Check with your instructor on the appropriateness of the business problem that your group wishes to investigate.

– Unless you are investigating a small business of a single owner, you don’t have to analyze all business functions (and related activities) and design an integrated system for the whole organization. Focus instead on a business function and study it thoroughly.

– Refer to the Systems Development Process discussed in the class for the necessary phases, steps, and deliverables in system analysis and design.

MILESTONES Your group should accomplish the following milestones to be on schedule:

– FEB 23: Statement on System Services / List of Project Team – MAR 17: Problem Statements for the Projects / System Objectives/ Functional

Requirements – APR 13: Candidate Solutions and Feasibility Analysis – APR 27: System Proposal (draft) – MAY 12: Presentation – Final Report (hard and soft copies) due in the last class meeting (May 12) –

DELIVERABLES You only have to hand in the “Statement on System Services” in the beginning and the “Final Report on System Proposal” at the end of the Semester. Statement of System Services: your team info, business location and contact info, business background, business problem(s), your initial proposed solution. [in 1 page] Final Report: should have the following documents/coverage:

– Executive Summary (What problem(s), What solution(s), Why, How much, How long) – Background of the Case (business location, activities, contact info) – Project Plan

o Business Problem o Project Scope / System Objectives o Proposition and Justification

– System Modeling o Process Modeling (Context, Level-0, Level-1 DFDs: Logical for Current System,

Logical and Physical for Proposed System) o Data Modeling (ERD, Data Dictionary for Proposed System) o Objects Modeling (UML Diagrams for Proposed System: Use Cases, Class,

Sequence, State-chart Diagrams) – Candidate Tech Solutions (Candidate Systems-Solutions Matrix) details for each.

– Feasibility Analysis / Cost-Benefit Analysis / ROI / Critical Success Factors / Risk Management (Feasibility Matrix of Candidate Solutions) details for each.

– Proposed Solution. – System Design (Input / Output, Databases, Software / Hardware / Interface) – Implementation Schedule (GANNT / PERT charts/ Conversion plan) – Other Recommendations (remaining minor problems, future upgrades)

Your group should hand in a professional report and a set of PowerPoint slides for presentation of your proposal. In the last week of the semester, if time allowed, each group will make a 10-minute presentation in class. Printed copies and soft copies of your final report and PowerPoint slides in PDF on CD/DVD should be handed-in in the last class meeting, MAY 12 (no extension). Each member should make a peer evaluation on the contribution of other members in the group work. Each evaluation should be put in a sealed envelope and attached to the group report. Individual credits will be calculated from the group performance and the individual contribution to the group work. NOTES

– The report templates in your textbook CD (in some editions) or on the textbook website are intended for your reference only. Don’t use them (i.e. copy and fill the blank!!!) in your project. Be creative. Be aware that the informed executives (your future employers or clients) know from which textbook these templates have been copied!!!

– Refer to a set of project report samples (previous IS 431 outstanding projects and ITC

projects) provided by the instructor for minimum requirements (and expectations) for your project.

(For illustration only, check specific requirements

in Project Specs)
