Sociologically speaking after reading, ‘Body Ritual among the Nacirema’ I came to realize the importance of religion and culture in a given organization. Individual elements of a particular culture may be brought about that may be perceived as intimidating to another culture. As it’s debatable about the origin of the Nacirema people, they have shown exceptional preservation of their culture and religion, compared to many individuals who focus much on economic growth.
Some of their religious rituals are the way they value shrines, and the more somebody possesses shrines he is considered wealthy. So every Nacirema person believes that it’s their mandate bestowed to them by their culture to have the shrines (Milner, 1956). These shrines are attended in secrecy by the Nacirema, and the ritual is important that the children are taught its importance during initiation period. Inside the shrines, it tends to have a charm-box that is used to preserve magic charms and potions given to them by the specialists. These contents are a time employed in shrines although they can be a time confusing.
Private mouth-rite is another ritual observed among the Nacirema people, conducted at least once or twice a year. It is one of the painful rituals that one undergoes. A hole is made on teeth, and then the paraphernalia which may consist awls and probes which are inserted into the hole inside the teeth. Nature that this ritual helps in guiding social relationship and the use of courtesies language among the young people (Milner, 1993). Besides some cases of teeth decay as a result of the holy- mouth ritual, the Nacirema people still upholds the ritual.
From this exercise, I can conclude that Nacirema as much us their origin is a mere guess from the East. This is a social group that gives the adherence of cultural and religious beliefs the centre stage in their daily activities. This is much different with most social groups and is evident well enough through the importance they bestow on having the shrines in their households among observation of other rituals articulated in the literature, ‘Body Ritual among the Nacirema.’
I can apply religious relativism because it is clearly evident that Nacirema have some ways to practice their religious activities that indeed shows ultimate respect for their religion and their faith in the same religion. This makes me change my previous take on their religious adherence of which I had a negative attitude. Since previously I perceived the building of shrines in the household as a waste and preferred the central place, like a temple to be used at the expense of having some shrines at home. But after reading on the Nacirema religion and culture indeed I have validated the importance that lies in the essence of having the shrines and the role they play regarding Nacirema religion. Reading about Nacirema adherence to their religion and culture to the extent of going through pain when carrying out some rituals like the private- mouth ritual, made me realize the importance of total dedication and commitment to what you dearly believe in at any given point no matter the nature of the means to acquire.
