– I think REI’s campaign worked so well because their objective wasn’t to make money, but instead, they followed their brand beliefs. Simon Sinek once said, “People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.” This is the reason why REI was doing so well and was able to close down all their stores on Black Friday. REI also offered free tools for the outdoor event. I believe that if Macy or Walmart had the same motives as REI and followed their own beliefs instead of just making more money on Black Friday, they would have the same kind of success.
2. Why do you think the Pepsi had faced so much backlash? If Pepsi had used another celebrity do you believe the same backlash would have happened? Yes/No? Why/Why Not? Please be detailed.
– I think Pepsi faced so much backlash because they had the wrong message on their ad. Their ad basically supported people protesting by selling Pepsi. Although Pepsi had another idea in mind, the ad comes off with a bad reputation for supporting protests. The idea of using protesting to sell Pepsi can be misunderstood or misleading. I don’t think the celerity was the problem in the Pepsi ad, so if Pepsi used another celebrity, it would have the same result. Although celebrities can be influential, the video message itself is the bigger picture.
