Is Intellectual Property an obstacle for innovative Start-ups?
Rapid changes in technologies and know-how motivate lots of individuals to come up with something new, a special drink recipe, a completely new technological standard or simply with new kinds of trading or payment possibilities. Intellectual property exists in on or the other way to encourage creativity and the above mentioned innovations by granting exclusive and special rights to individuals in order to ensure that they are the sole beneficiary of their work or their invested amount of time and money.
Each year over two million patents are registered but only few of them really succeed on the market or are simply renewed by the owners. Grossmann and Helpman (1991), stated that the economic growth is increasingly focusing on the power of expected profits to enforce innovation. On the other hand experts debate whether strong protection of intellectual property stimulates or retards growth and innovations.
An important question, however, is whether intellectual property protection is always consistent with innovation and growth or compared as an obstacle. For example, if Start Ups only innovate and come up with ideas to capture a share of the market, they may not increase their rate of innovation with stronger intellectual property rights, when their share of the market is already guaranteed.
In my Research paper I want to outline the various obstacles which might occur for Startups during the process, from the initial Idea finding until the ultimately registered patent or IP. Further more I want to shed more light on the topic of Open Innovation related to Intellectual Property and why this is in my point of view.
