Writing a thesis requires that you begin with a “MAIN IDEA” and finish with “THREE, SUPPORTING POINTS.” All of this creates one sentence.
THESIS = MAIN IDEA + 3 SUPPORTING POINTS
Look at the following example:
Main idea: Examining reality television is important because… (This is the first part of the sentence known as the Main Idea).
Three, Supporting points: …it is a reflection on our social values, it can show the worst of people’s character and it can thwart people’s perceptions. (This is the second part of the sentence, known as your three supporting points).
Now, let’s put all parts together, into one sentence.
THESIS: “Examining reality television is important because it is a reflection on our social values, it can show the worst of people’s character and it can thwart people’s perceptions.”
