What are the challenges that face air transportation carriers and shippers? In your opinion, how can these risks be mitigated?

With the advancements in our technology, E-commerce businesses have boomed and never looked back. It is expected that those services will be utilized more in the future where everything has become easier. On that note, air transportation has been a frequent choice in distributing products compared to the slow water transportation system or land transport. Although it’s easy and reliable, it also faces several challenges as well.
Number one problem is the growing number of e-commerce packages. It has become more complex since a lot of on-going and out-going flights recently have been experienced which makes it difficult to make an efficient system to solve problems such as air logistics, meeting requirements of customs, and the like (Nuijten, 2018). Secondly, due to numerous flights, air traffic has been a problem frequently and can eventually cause delays to the distribution of products. This is not only a problem for the airline company but to the passengers as well which will incur delay-related costs (National Academy of Science, 2019). Moreover, the customers opting to buy the product from the manufacturer will complain and eventually, will not support the company’s products anymore if these delays are not mitigated. Last but not least, one obvious problem of air transportation companies is the surging price of fuel (IRC Group Global LTD, 2017). Although there is a huge demand on these services, prices of fuel have made the net income close to break-even which is a big problem because if they continue to increase prices, the clients will just opt other methods such as land or water transportation even if they are slower compared to air transport.
In my opinion, the first obstacle can be overcome if they will use the current technology in automating a few of the processes involved in checking the cargos. Since it’s easy to order online, then that means some of the manual checks or procedures should be automated in order to reduce the delays. Just make sure that the steps should also include security features in order not to bypass some procedures. Next, regarding the air traffic problems, companies should invest more in infrastructures such as runways, taxis, and such in order to accommodate the growing number of flights happening to the airports daily. This should be expected since more and more people are trying to go out of the country for travel and a lot of the also order products internationally as well which can hit two birds in one stone. Lastly, the rising prices of fuels can’t be stopped since it’s a non-renewable kind of energy. However, this can be mitigated by efficiently organizing an optimized transport in order to maximize the high cost per trip. With this, no extra space will be a waste. Although it’s easy to suggest pushing through this method could also make potential problems such as delays because the company will try to wait and fill up all unfilled spaces. The problem could only be mitigated by an extensive study on consumers demands and flight schedules.
In summary, air transportation is not always the best solution since several challenges are present almost every day. Logistically speaking, the use of all methods such as air, water, and land should all be studied carefully in order to maximize every trip therefore, saving fuel costs that are very high nowadays.

Most of the risks associated with air transportation fall under the umbrellas of employee negligence/misconduct or security threats. In the case of the former, airlines continuously screen employees for substance abuse to mitigate any risks that could result from such practices (Coyle, Novack, & Gibson, 2016). Behavioral observation programs are another supplementary method airlines may choose to adopt to reduce safety and security issues. In these programs, employees are required to observe and report discrepancies in the behavior and body language of coworkers to stop issues related to substance abuse, stress, and lack of sleep before they cause irreversible damage.
Adding rapid distress devices coupled with remote emergency override technology would reduce the payoff potential for terrorist aircraft hijackings. However, this option would only be viable if technology is available that can ensure against hacking. Ultimately, any system that can reduce the impact of terrorism can serve to prevent it in the first place.
Another security consideration that could affect freight transportation is the recent U.S. legislation requiring all freight loaded into passenger aircraft to be screened (Coyle et al, 2016). This requirement has potential to slow down passenger and/or freight transportation significantly. One way to increase the efficiency of this practice would be to develop a system in which freight could be searched by security personnel at a single point, scheduled a necessary amount of time in advance. and verified continuously in transit. Use of verifiable containers and seals would allow personnel at each node to quickly confirm that the previously searched freight had not been tampered with. Techniques such as these would ensure freight is both safe and rapidly transferred between aircraft.
