My name is Rajiv Roberts. I am a senior in the Financial Engineering major in the Donald College of Super Engineering.
In the Skill Development Workshop last month, you mentioned that there was some funding available for undergraduate students. I am writing to seek your support in providing me the course fees for one of my summer courses through the available funding that you mentioned.
At Fresno State, I am enrolled in an upper-division writing course titled Technical Writing (Course ID: IT198W) this summer under Professor Halloween Bruce. This writing course is a requirement for graduation and serves as an advanced course for learning effective workplace communication in both oral and written contexts.
Please note that I am currently an employee at the Level-2 Tier in ABCD Inc., and my role is to develop Manuals for our products. Since our unit plays a major role in developing and editing the Manuals and documents, this course is very important for me in order to get a promotion to Level-3 position. The outcome of my study will go a long way in the workplace because the course IT198W provides the skills my company is looking for. The following important foci for our company are major components of the class: (i) preparation and writing or reports, proposals, and white papers, (ii) document design, including graphics placement and style selection, (iii), technical research for formal documents and for decisions and recommendations, and (iv) user-friendly web design and formats for our online presence. Writing is an important part of our organization, and more so for the Level-2 Tier, and expertise is necessary to contribute to the company and serve the society. I have learned techniques to apply towards more persuasive proposals, informative reports, and concise and precise emails. I have also learned important aspects of document design such as style-sheets, which can unify our documents under a cohesive format, and proper usage and placement of graphics, figures, and tables, as well as appropriate styling guidelines for such elements. Technical research was covered extensively in the class, from identifying credible and apropos sources to using published research and conducting primary research in the form of interviews and surveys to analyzing research papers. Web design was also covered in both content and style contexts.
This course teaches appropriate guidelines to verbal and written technical communication and provides skills and knowledge to effect these guidelines in the workplace. It will improve my interpersonal collaboration skills and help me better contribute to the company’s vision and mission. The course not only fulfills my graduation requirements but also provides a rich environment for examining and improving my writing level.
While the course itself is online, there are tuition costs. The fee for this 3-unit class is $1000. The cost of textbook (Technical Communication: A Practical Approach, 8th Edition, by Pfeiffer and Adkins) is also required for this course and costs $100.
I sincerely request you if could please reimburse my Tuition Fee and the cost of the textbook for this course in the summer session. The total amount is $1100. The experience and the skills that I am gaining are, I believe, worth far more to my company and my future career.
