Topic My Ethical Theory Turabian Format Cited Using Footnotes Write Two 500 Words Discussion Board

When reading this discussion board topic many thoughts came to mind about which theory I could call my own. Throughout the past four weeks I’ve been was saying, “I fit into this theory, oh wait this is more of me”. So here is my personal ethical theory. It’s called ‘My Theory’. I am going to discuss my theory in detail in the following paragraphs, but to start I will be describing my theory as a combination between Virtue Ethics, Revelation Christian Ethics, and Divine Nature Theory.

First, I will talk about virtue ethics. The part of virtue ethics that best describe my personal ethic theory is the fact that virtue ethics is essentially based on how you are raised and the moral characteristics you practice. An example I use to describe virtue ethics is what Aristotle refers to. He says virtues as being character traits that persuade you to act and react in a moral way. He also refers to virtue ethics as a balance between two extremes or otherwise known as, the “Golden Mean.” Virtue ethics to me, means that if you practice being a the kind of person Christ was, then this would be the ultimate way to live. I do not believe that your geography doesn’t determine your destination. Meaning, if you grew up in a morally messed up home where things were not ok, you have the choice when you’re old enough to not let those traits your parents had define you. If you practice morally acceptable things, loving others, caring for people and helping those who need a hand when they are at their lowest, that’s what matters!

Second is Revelation Christian Ethics. According to Nickolas Davis from Core Christianity, “Revelation is how God, the Creator of all things, makes himself known to us—his creatures. Without God speaking to us—in nature and in the Bible—we would have no way of knowing that he exists, who he is, what he has done to save us in Jesus Christ, or how we are to live and worship him” [1]. Without God’s word, we would have no path. We would wonder aimlessly and evil would spread far and wide across the globe. Without faith, what would we have to combat the evils of Satan?

Lastly, Divine Nature Theory. What this means to me is that we were created in the image of God. He made all things, from the complexity of people to the smallest microscopic particles. Everything was designed for reason and a purpose. I think this is important for many reasons. The first reason would be when all else fails in life, faith is what you need to fall back on. People who battle depression, addiction, lust, you name it, your faith is that accountability partner that never leaves you’re side. The last reason is it gives us hope and something to work toward. Today, most people settle for what’s comfortable and easy. They don’t chase their TRUE purpose for the fear of judgement from people they don’t even know. Having faith be you’re light in the dark, it makes chasing those dreams and purpose not as scary if you are to fail.

These are the three metaethic that create “My Theory”, Virtue Ethics, Revelation Christian Ethics and Divine Nature Theory. I have not only learned a lot about the different types of metaethic’s but I have also learned a lot about myself in the process.

Meta ethics is all about determining what’s moral or immoral. Like last week’s discussion on whether or not it is moral or immoral to break a promise. According to the theory of ethical egoism, it describes that a person should do what benefits them first. And an example, I like to use is that this theory is like the safety flight demonstration perform by flight attendants, were they say put on your own oxygen mask first before helping others. In my opinion, the theory of ethical egoism is the best approach to ethics because the theory is about benefitting yourself without being too greedy.

According to the theory of ethical egoism, the consequences of an action is what determines if something is moral or immoral. For example if the end result, resulted in your surviving or benefiting like in a life or death situation then the act is moral. If the end results are negative with no one benefitting or a person not caring on others feelings the act becomes immoral. Now there is two types of people, an egotist an egoist. They both look similar which makes it more confusing, but an egotist is a person who only thinks about him or herself and only acts on their own desires. An egoist, is a person who is caring for others, or putting him or herself in someone else shoes, thinking how others would face consequences. So to put it in perspective, an egotist is immoral and an egoist is moral because they still consider others. Even if an egoist breaks a promise they only do it because they were facing a challenging decision like life or death. And if an egotist breaks a promise it’s considered immoral because they only cared for themselves from the beginning and there was never any trust. The theory of ethical egoism best illustrates a clear approach to ethics because it seems to be human nature to judge by consequence. For example, the college admissions scandal, the actresses and actors who paid bribes for their children to get into top colleges are consider an egotist because we know that by judging the consequence. And the consequence was that their children got into top schools with the help of greed, and so we judge those parents as an egotist as they only acted in their own desires. And an example of a egoist is someone like a firefighter or military soldier or anyone who serves for others because they risk themselves to help others. By using this theory of ethical egoism it helps illustrate why the consequences are moral or immoral.

An approach to meta ethics is all about perspective, some people have different beliefs because of their background or culture, but it is human nature to always look at events to see the consequences and to see if it is negative or positive. Like watching the news, if the news media reports a deadly shooting, obviously it is negative and immoral and we judge it because it is a consequence from an action, which makes the theory of ethical egoism the best approach to meta ethics.
