Contemporary Issues in Business Leadership Assignment Guidelines
All written assignments must:
- Be original work with an application to your job and organization;
- Comply with the specific requirements noted for each assignment in the syllabus;
- Adhere to APA citation and referencing rules; citations and references must be from the last 5 years, but two years is preferred;
- Be grammatically correct and properly formatted;
- Submitted to Blackboard Learn by the due date (typically the Sunday of the week assigned);
- Include a cover page with Class Name, Assignment Name, Your Name, and Assignment Due Date; and
- Use the grading rubric to self-assess your work and submit as the final page to each assignment.
Format of written assignments:
- Any format that fits the assignment (APA, business writing such as a white paper or briefing, etc.); and
- Double spaced, Times New Roman, Font size 12.
Submission of assignments:
- Failure to comply with any of these instructions or those included in the syllabus constitutes a failure of the assignment.
- Intersession 1: Leadership Behaviors and Skills (Part 1)Please use the Mentoring resources covered in class to identify and secure a mentor for this class. You should make a formal, written request to mentor you. Your request should include all the elements you want from a good mentorship.
Some examples are:- The commitment of time (minimum of 50 hours over the 8 weeks)
- Your expectations of them (advice, opportunities, etc.)
- Please submit a “signed” agreement by your mentor attesting to their agreement of the mentorship.
Prepare a document that includes a protocol checklist and interview questions you will use to interview your mentor.
Protocol checklist examples include: - Length of time for the interview
- Location for the interview (their office may not be the best place for no interruptions)
- Whether interruptions will be allowed for either of you
- Can you record the interview?
- The interview questions can be open or close ended. Open ended questions allow them to provide any type of answer. Close ended questions give them answer choices. The questions should seek to discover:
- General behaviors or skills they use as a leader
- Specific behaviors or skills they used in a situation
- Use the assignment from Intersession 2 to guide the actual questions you will use.

Intersession 2: Leadership Behaviors & Skills (Part 2)Use the interview from Intersession 1 to complete this assignment. In a 1-2 page paper summarizing your interview findings on the leadership style(s) used by your mentor in a specific situation and why. Please address the following:
- How would they describe their leadership style and how does it affect the organization?
- What was the situation they had to deal with and why? (You can ask for more than 1 situation.)
- How did they handle the situation and why?
- What influence did their actions have on followers’ perceptions and performance?
- Would they change any of the actions they employed and why?
- What advice would they provide to those who might experience the same type of situation?
- Your assessment/summary should include the answers to the prompts above. It should also include material and findings from our class, your professional experience, and any other research on the leadership topic. Please find and utilize at least two current articles to support your discussion of the leadership topic.
