Classification Essay Instructions

We’ve spent the last five weeks walking through the instructions for how to format your essays ( Instructions for Formatting Essays ). We’ve also stressed the importance of organizing your essays in a specific way, placing a specific thesis at the end of your introductory paragraph. Last week we introduced some ways to incorporate transitions into your work ( Using Transitions ). The importance of using concrete examples was discussed. Most everyone has done a good job of avoiding the ‘you’ pronoun also. Now, it’s time to put all this to work when you write your remaining essays. This week you will construct a  Classification essay .

 

Approved topics

You have shown the ability to follow the guidelines discussed. For this essay, I’d like you to choose one of the following topics:

· Explain the types of students at Macomb (or in a particular class).

· Write a classification of the communication styles in your workplace.

· Write a classification of restaurants or fast food spots in your town.

· Classify different styles of music.

OR

· You may select any of the topics on page 135 of Real Essays under the College, Work, or Everyday Life categories (there is some duplication with the above list.

You should have  at least three  specific categories of classification which should be clearly stated in your thesis statement.  Your body paragraphs should expand upon these points, using vivid examples to help your reader understand what you mean.

The essay must be at least five paragraphs long.  Each paragraph should have from 5-7 sentences.  Be sure to choose a logical organizational pattern for the details, such as spatial or least to most important.

Your thesis will clearly state your three points of classification;

Include transitional words and/or phrases to move your reader from paragraph to paragraph.

Do not use the ‘you’ pronoun in the essay. Instead, if you need to use a singular pronoun, use  I   or  one.  

Stay away from the grammar felonies: sentence fragments, comma splices, and run-on sentences.

Be sure to proofread it carefully to eliminate any writing errors.

Save the paper in one of the approved formats and upload it to the Dropbox

 

Below are the evaluation standards for the essay

· Is the essay on an approved topic and does it have an introduction, body, and conclusion?

· Does the introduction have a thesis statement that names the categories and is placed at the end of the introduction?

· Do the details of the paragraphs go along with the topic sentences without drifting?

· Are the ideas of the essay arranged in a clear spatial, chronological, or progressive order?

· Are the paragraphs are well developed, with general and concrete examples?

· Would a reader be distracted from the content by writing errors?
