04 Oct legalize aid in dying
Remember, your position for this assignment is to legalize aid in dying.
The reason we have these two position paper topics (aid in dying and the death penalty) is precisely because reasonable people can stand on either side–initially, if you oppose aid in dying, or you want the death penalty, ok, you are not alone; but this paper pattern is set-up primarily so each student can learn effective organizational patterns, how to use sources effectively, and how to use a variety of strategies–logical, emotional, and ethical–to support and counter. Just get through these assignments and focus on learning the pattern.
First, carefully watch the Seattle Channel video, and then develop one counterargument from the Seattle Channel video; first, focus on the debate between Dr. Susan Rutherford and Counselor Arline Hinckley.
You need to summarize and paraphrase just one complete counter-argument. Remember, if you use the actual, exact wording, you must wrap that phrase in quotation marks (integrated quotes).
Remember, a counter-argument is Two parts: first, you present the objection, and then you counter it. It might help you understand this two-part distinction by simply adding a question mark to the objection. Please note that one source, one paragraph–so you will have two paragraphs for this assignment: the first paragraph presents the objection, with a source, and the second paragraph counters, also with a source. Remember, from here on out, we are writing source-based papers!
For example, start your first line with the following sub-title: Too Depressed to Make a Rational Decision? Then hit the enter key so your first complete sentence will be the claim statement of Dr. Susan Rutherford’s objection: According to Dr. Susan Rutherford, MD, ‘terminally ill patients are too depressed to make a rational decision.” This claim statement will then be followed by one or two of her supporting sentences. Hit the enter key and then you counter it in a new paragraph with a summary by Arline Hinckley. Make sense? So, now, you will have at least two complete paragraphs, making-up one counter-argument.
Or you can start out your counter-argument with the following sub-title: Violates Oath? Dr. Rutherford says it “goes against the grain.” The oath she references is the Hippocratic Oath (which does not specifically say, physicians “above all, do no harm” but that is her reference. Once you have a decent paragraph supporting her objection, then, you start a new paragraph with the new, revised oath (found online) which emphasizes empathy and listening and valuing the patients wishes and desires.
Ok to use Dr. Reba de Tornay’s claim that the law would lead to a Slippery Slope to Euthanasia? Then, counter with the strict requirements of the aid in dying law from Oregon or Washington’s safeguards and protocols; Hinckley does make a brief statement in response, as well.
In each instance, mark your end boundary with a parenthetical key word citation: (Seattle Channel) or (brief key words from an article title or the organization name).
Other objections to counter are the following:
Pain Management Is Effective? (Note the exchange between Rutherford and Hinckley.)
Doctor’s Often Wrong In Their Prognosis? (Rutherford makes this claim and Hinckley counters it in this video.)
Make sure to use signal phrases (According to…, or Rutherford claims…, or Hinkley argues…).
Use the Modern Language Association citation system (MLA), which requires a signal phrase (According to… Source claims… Source argues that…) with our end boundary marker modifications (Seattle Channel). Please note that the end boundary marker goes before the final period. Briefly review the student example paper in the Week Five module.
Do not use the incorrect term of “assisted suicide” for this position (to legalize aid in dying); although, the video title includes that term, it is incorrect and outdated, and Hinckley does not use that term.
Briefly review one or two of the linked terminology sources I posted in the Aid in Dying Sources (Module). Remember? C.R. Douglas begins the video with the statement that even how to refer to the topic is controversial–“Some say it is assisted suicide and some say it is death with dignity” (Seattle Channel). The opposing side claims it promotes suicide, which is countered by the clear safety protocols and requirements.
Do not reference I-1000 in any assignments; just keep your focus on legalizing aid in dying, so craft your reasons and any counter-arguments with the focus on the position–legalize aid in dying (you can use specific examples, but since I-1000 passed in 2008, Washington law is settled).
Do your best to just argue directly and to counter directly (avoiding passive voice or avoiding using the topic as the subject in any sentence).
You may find yourself going outside the video to add one paragraph in your counter.
You can take a look at the counter-arguments in the Student Example papers to get a good idea of the final counter-argument (posted in the Modules).
Please upload a Word file for all assignments (do not use the text option).
