Based on the internal team role assignments you anticipate making for your project, which roles might need to be filled by the vendor?
In developing a successful project team, it is important to look at everyone’s background, to make sure they are qualified for the role that they are chosen for, and feel confident that they can successfully fulfill their role. When selecting someone for a particular role, their history in the particular area they are being considered for is important, the amount of pay they are requesting, and the amount of time they are able to contribute matters greatly. For the IRTC project, there are five people in the team with all different professional backgrounds. For the project, we are looking to fill three different roles; the end user, the business analyst and the team leader. The end user is the person or people who will be using the new software. This means that someone on the team will have to fully understand what the company is expecting from the software, and test the software to ensure the software is upgraded to the company’s liking. The business analyst is very similar as the project manager, but has different things to focus on. The business analyst “typically focuses on the end product (solution)” (Larson 2010). The team leader takes on the role of managing the others involved in the project, by making sure they stay on task and do not encounter any problems. For this IRTC project, the role of business analyst would best be filled by the vendor. This would be due to the background and the opportunities that the current team members have, and are looking to gain throughout this project.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of using the vendor in these roles for this project?
Using a vendor can definitely have many different advantages and disadvantages. One advantage of using a vendor would be cost efficiency. Even though there may be individuals on your team who would be perfect in the particular are that you may be seeking extra help in, it may be more cost efficient to hire someone else who will do the job at a cheaper rate. It could also be more cost efficient because it would cost less to have to train an internal employee, when the vendor already specializes or has a background in that area. Another advantage of using the vendor is the ability to focus on other important areas for the internal team. The team already has an idea of what exactly needs to be done in the project, and can be focusing on more or bigger projects, while the vendor focuses one in particular. The expertise of the vendor and better management would also be an advantage due to the fact that the vendor has more background in the area, so they would know the unrealized risks of the project and can manage their team to avoid those risks as much as possible.
Disadvantages of using a vendor to fill roles for the project would be exposing confidential data, the quality of the work could be compromised, and a risk of financial overload. Although it would seem that using an outside vendor would not have many risks, it is always a big risk when there is someone new coming in to help with a job that is not theirs. It can cause the vendor to be careless, and not take as many safety precautions as someone internal, which could create leaked confidential data, or a security breach. Also, because the vendor would be helping temporarily on the project, there is the risk that the quality of work would not be as great, due to rushing to complete the job, and leaving the internal teams to pick up where the vendor left off. An advantage mentioned previously was cost efficiency, but utilizing an outside vendor can also cost a financial overload for the project because if no one on the internal team has any expertise in a particular area, causing the vendor to be hired, it could cause more money to be spent on the project because it could have been less expensive to pay a few internal members overtime than a whole new team.
