The Apostle Paul instructs believers to, “Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity,” (Colossians 4:5, NIV). If I were a youth pastor facing a group who had been experiencing with drugs and alcohol, then I would feel obligated to not only give them a personal testimony from own my struggles with poly-substance abuse but give them truth about the physical, social, psychological, financial, and spiritual effects of drug and alcohol use. It is important to understand that addiction does not discriminate between age, race, social status, creed, or even religious preference. I would explain to the parents and teens that there is not a definite answer as to why some people can use and substance and put in down with ease as opposed to a person who uses and becomes addicted, (Van Wormer & Davis, 2018). It would be important for the teens to hear that a person places themselves in serious risk when using these chemicals and how they can actually change the chemical make up of the brain. According to Lasser (2004), some families can have a trouble communicating to each other about tough issues or they do not communicate at all about them or their feelings. He brings to light that people often fit themselves into to “roles” or parts they play in their family. These roles become dangerous when they do not line up to whom God has truly called the person to be, (Lasser, 2004). I would hope this information shared with the kids and parents would help establish a comfortable environment when they are together at home to have open communication about tough issues. I would let the teens know that not one person is perfect and everyone makes bad choices, but when we choose to be accountable, honest, and practice good habits together it becomes easer to say no to things that can cause such devastation in our lives. Van Wormer and Davis (2018) note that blackouts and often dangerous behavior are associated with substance use. There have been countless reports of crimes committed, STDs contracted, rapes, and unplanned pregnancies due to blackouts and other dangerous behavior due to substance use, (Lasser, 2004; Van Wormer & Davis (2018). Drugs and/or alcohol use can have a negative effect on virtually every major organ and lead to many potential life threatening conditions including accidents that can lead to injury and death, (Van Wormer & Davis, 2018).

As a pastor, I would inform the teens that the use of alcohol and drugs is not a path that they want to go down as it effects their physical and mental health. I would let them know when they wake up from drinking and feel sick or hung over, their body is actually experiencing a type of alcohol poisoning. Their body is dehydrated, and it causes them to feel sick, have a headache, or be irritable. The use of alcohol and drugs can affect their grades at school. It interferes with decision making, social and personal skills. The continued use can cause permanent brain damage and increase a teenager’s risk for dependency, car accidents, and unintentional injuries. According to Van Wormer and Davis (2018) substance misuse leads to many medical consequences and “alcohol contributes to brain damage both directly and indirectly” (p. 142). The brain, liver, heart, and genitourinary tract are all effected.
I would inform the teens that God has made our body in His image and the Bible does instruct us to refrain from getting high. One example can be found at Ephesians 5:18 and it states, “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit” (New International Version). We are created for our life to be purposeful and God wants every part of us to be pure. We are His refection. We have to line up our spirit with God’s. I would inform the teens that when they sin, they disrupt their relationship with God and slide away. Yes, God will always be there for us, but when we sin, we do not always have the desire to return our life to God. We start to make excuses. (words 289)
