Assignment itself Choose one text from two different non-academic genres (two texts in total) that address the same topic. Topics may include anything ranging from a current (or historical!) social or political issue to the latest, hot topic in popular culture. Likewise, examples of non-academic genres include, but are not limited to the following list: newspaper articles, magazines, comic books, blogs, political propaganda, cooking recipes, horoscopes, and credit card promotional letters. Then identify, analyze, and compare the writing conventions and context of each genre. Writing conventions: How do the genres differ in style? How do they differ in word choice? What evidence do the authors use (if any)? What other writerly choices to they make, and how do they affect the overall structure of the text to that of individual words. Context: What is the authors purpose? What is the tone? What sorts of rhetorical devises do they employ to reach their intended audience? Is there an unintended audience? What is the writers (and the readers) context, and how does it shape the genre? Be sure to support your analysis with specific examples from the texts, and draw from the ideas in the assigned readings. Remember to cite! Writing strategies were working on here: Identifying and comparing different genres Examining their conventions and context Reflecting on the rhetorical devises used in different contexts Considering genres within the framework of their social function, i.e. as more than simple categories of identification Readings for this assignment: Elbow, Teaching Two Kinds of Thinking Dirk, Navigating Genres Bunn, How to Read like a Writer Project Builder 1a (PB1a): Genre Identification and Description due Jan. 12 (2 pages) Identify and describe the two non-academic genres of the texts you have chosen.
