To conclude our module, you will create a closing post. This posting will address both the overall discussion on the module (from your starting post and responses) but also must include your thoughts on the module video; how it connects to, challenges, and or reaffirms our discussions; and reflects on the module video question.Starting post.Civil Rights & the Search for Social Justice: Q3The murder of Emmett Till and the manner in which the authorities, public, and media handled the issue paints the picture of wanton discrimination in the history of the United States. The fact that the incident attracted the attention of global powers,France, Belgium, Germany, and Italy and altered the political environment, illustrates that the situation weighed heavily on the conscience of many. Judging from the circumstances that led to young Till’s death, it is evident that the Civil Rights Movement was necessary, as all aspects of the American society were rotting from discrimination. Although Till did wrong by whistling at Carolyn Bryant, the court completely overlooked the more serious issue, whereby Carolyn’s husband, Roy Bryant, along with J. William brutally beat and shot the boy in the head before dumping his body in the Tallahatchie River. Clearly, the African American society was regarded poorly, and any heinous act against them was accorded undue merit.Dominique Christina’s poem, For Emmett Till, provides a historical and personal juxtaposition of sorrow and hope that centers on Emmett Till’s innocence and society’s ills to elicit the gravity of discrimination of African Americans and the urgency for change. Through her motherly instinct, Christina creatively personalizes the situation by noting that the young boy had hazel brown eyes and would make cornbread when his mother was not looking. Such personalization depicts the innocence and oblivion of the boy and convinces the audience that he was not deserving of death. To unite history with creativity, Christina refers to the issues of African American slavery as plantations that dress the terrorism in white lace gloves in a mint julep. In so saying, she points to the fact that the black community faced discrimination yet they had no solace since the system justified it.Here is the replys that I have1) The Emmett Till case was so sad to learn about, the poor boy suffered so much trauma for only whistling at a lady. I think that the whole case was wrong. The murder and kidnapping was very wrong, but the justice was never followed through on. Emmett Till never got the justice he deserved for being murdered, and his poor family did not either. It goes to show how important the Civil Rights Movement is in today;s society. I know there are more cases like this and it frustrates me that the case was reopened and at that time they were unable to change the men because the laws now are different then the laws then. I hope there are no more cases like this in the future with the justice system expanding. It is not fair for someone to commit such a brutal act and not be punished for there actions. I really enjoyed reading your post and seeing that you agree that the Civil Rights Movement is important and was important then too. I hope Emmett Till’s family was able to find piece somehow, even though the murder was never actually punished for killing or kidnapping the boy.2)I enjoyed reading your post. I couldn’t help but point out that in the reading of Emmit’s lynching, they later say that Carolyn Bryant admits to lying about the boy whistling at her. But that still doesn’t defeat the point of why would she lie about something like that. Obviously it wasn’t just Emmit that did something wrong. She heavily discriminated against Black people. Dominique’s poem created very vivid images all the way through, from the beginning on the way Emmit was as a little boy. His personality and high physical appearance all the way to the way him and his mother has similar looks in the face. She goes on to talk about the brutality that was placed on young Emmit and the impact that the attack had on the community and his mother. She finished the story, like you said talking about how she wants her young boy to be proud of being black and to know what happened. But to also live everyday to the fullest and take to silly moments and not forget them, she says in her poem And slip by me and get the extra cornbread whenever you can. as she encourages her boy to take the bread so she could never forget him for the boy that he was and his personality. The purpose of her saying that i think is that you never know what tomorrow brings to savor today.skyline.ucdenver.edu/record=b3594379~S0
