11465Part 1: Field Experience Notes:
Discuss with your mentor teacher your expectations for identifying, selecting, and working with a small group of students. From your previous observation in your field experience classroom, identify students in the classroom environment that would benefit from additional learning support. Share this information with your mentor teacher to determine 3-5 students, above, at, or below standard achievement, to work with on standards specific to this classroom’s social studies content area.

1. NOW CREATE A Pre-Assessment in the U.S. Government 3 BRANCHES and their JOBS for the SECOND GRADE social studies content area aligned to the standards and unit your mentor teacher shared during Clinical Field Experience A. This pre-assessment can ONLY be oral. IMPORTANT NOTE This week’s Mentor Teacher does NOT use written or technology pre-assessments. The pre-assessment you CREATE should identify how well-selected students know the concept and provide data that would allow you to determine learning gaps and needs to develop an appropriate lesson to support learning needs.

2. Share the pre-assessment with your mentor teacher and ask for his or her feedback. NOTE
HIS FEEDBACK WAS-There has been little success in “pre-assessments” that align with social studies. I believe this is the case for one primary reason. “Pre-assessments” have little value because the context of information received and requested often varies significantly. This week’s mentor teacher will ONLY use orally for pre-assessments.

Part 2: Reflection
In 300 words or more, summarize and reflect on your field experience, including the steps you took to identify students for the pre-assessment and their pre-assessment results.
Additionally this week’s Mentor Interview Questions and Answers:
1. How did the pre-assessment provide data to determine the learning gaps and needs of students
HIS ANSWER- There has been little success in “pre-assessments” that align with the social studies. I believe this is the case for one primary reason. “Pre-assessments” have been of little value because the context of information received and information requested often varies significantly.

2. What challenges did you face when developing and delivering the pre-assessment?
HIS ANSWER- Optimal feedback received from students in the past has been in the domain of physical geography. Students who are well travelled, and or come from families that value outdoor recreation, frequently possess an impressive baseline knowledge of the earth’s surface. This even includes the use of maps. This has been such a successful pre-assessment because it also identifies students with noteworthy deficiencies. I’ve used the assessment to arrange for seatting to create a “scaffolded” experience by passing out assignments and encouraging collaboration.

3. Explain how you use your findings in your future professional practice.
HIS ANSWER- The pre-assessments were not processed to provide data. Instead, pre-assessments were designed to provide information. The difference between the two may seem subtle, but it’s nonetheless, noteworthy. By seeking information instead of data the process becomes more subjective. In addition to whether answers are correct or not, I can subjectively make determinations of confidence, and enthusiasm.
The challenge with delivering a pre-assessment is what it costs in terms of time. Each student must be met where they are. Instead of conducting pre-assessments, I begin lessons off within, “the Zone of Proximal Development”, and incrimentally expand with new challenges. This enables me to determin the aptitude of students and adjust accordinglly.

Finally, in the reflection also include Explain how I will use findings in my classroom.
