For exploration, it might be how exploration affects the ocean environment. Etc. Alternately, the link to oceanography could be how the oceans preserve enough organic matter in their sediments to become a source for petroleum. What kind of ocean environment would it have been? How long would it need to persist to preserve enough organic matter to become, eventually, a source for oil or gas. Something like that.
