General instructions:
Please answer all of the following three questions. The first and second are each worth 40% of the total grade and the last is worth the remaining 20%. You are allowed a maximum of 12 double spaced typed pages using a 12 point font for your answers for all three questions combined (e.g. 5 pages for question 1, 5 pages for question 2 and 2 pages for question 3).
Exams should be submitted by email to me at swr@uci.edu. Please submit the exam with your name in the subject line and the exam attached as a MS Word document. Also double check that your document has no viruses. Exams should be submitted by 10 pm on Tuesday June 7. Late exams will not be accepted.

1) Conservatism and fascism both emerge as critiques of liberalism. As such they share certain similarities and differences. (1) In what ways are they similar and in what ways are they different? In answering please consider all the dimensions of the two as ideologies. This would include: (a) their view of human nature, (b) their view of society and (c) what the polity (the state, the citizen and governance) should be. For conservatism, please focus on the work of Burke and Ortega y Gasset. For fascism, focus on the work of Gentile. (2) In this light, briefly argue why you believe Donald Trump should be considered a fascist or a conservative.
2) Socialism is sometimes confused with contemporary liberalism (particularly as expressed in the “welfare liberalism” of John Rawls and John Dewey that you read for class). (1) Please clarify how socialism is different from this ‘left liberalism.’ (2) In this light, please briefly argue why you believe Bernie Sanders (a self-declared socialist) should be considered either a socialist ora welfare liberal.
3) Please argue why developing an ideological perspective or having an ideology should be important for you.
