How does the film, “What Happened, Miss Simone,” engage the memory of slavery and the meaning of freedom. Perform a critical analysis and close reading of this text.
Key questions:
How does this text tell the history of slavery, of resistance to slavery, of revolution, and of freedom? What does it have to say about the meaning of freedom? Does it reinforce, challenge, or ask us to reconsider contemporary understandings of freedom under capitalism? How does the form or genre of the text shape the way it represents slavery? What are the politics of this form of representation? What political and historical conditions and projects give rise to this particular form of representation/memory? How does this narrative shape our understanding of, ratify, or challenge our modes of living in the political present? How can you engage the intellectual tradition of black radical critique in your close reading? In other words, how might the black radical tradition offer useful ways of reading the text in order to rethink and reimagine slavery, resistance, and the meaning of freedom?
Finally, remember that the goal of this seminar is to focus in depth on how we remember histories of slavery; and to understand the political conditions that generate the narrative forms through which we tell these stories. The point is to develop critical positions on: 1) the politics of narrative form, genre, and historical memory (i.e. culture); and 2) the problem of freedom (i.e., the contradiction between given meanings of freedom under capitalism and the ways in which freedom has been imagined otherwise).
