This assignment is due Thursday September 8, in class – it is about Robots. You are a new graduate of WPI and work for IBM – a global provider of Information Technology Products and Services.
IBM believes that Robots are going to be a huge engine of economic success over the next 20 years.
You have been tasked by your boss, Ms. Global Strategy to research ways that robots can be used to automate both the services and manufacturing sectors, and in the process return business to the U.S., vs. Outsourcing or Offshoring the work to other countries. Use the memo form – 2 to 3 single spaced pages are expected.
Factors to consider:
What are reasonable timeframes to see a return of Mfg. work in general to the U.S., and what are the implications for the Services industry in the U.S., of the use of more robots? In particular, will robot deployment hurt future employent, and/or the mix of jobs companies have, and why? Is there evidence?
Also, from your perspective, where do you see where robots are in being used a. in the Mfg/ sector; b. In the Services sector.
In the Services sector, you should isolate futures for Robots in: Restaurants, Retail, Health Care and Transportation. Other sectors can be examined/added, based on your research.
What are your recommendations to IBM? Be specific.
