Aristotle argued that “the greatest thing by far is to be a master of metaphor” because metaphoric expression allows us to see meaningful similarities between
dissimilar ideas, the most difficult but rewarding task a poet can perform. In this essay, carry out a close reading of one of the poems from our poetry unit that
considers in detail how a poet uses a metaphor or a simile to develop a new relationship between two seemingly dissimilar ideas. A successful essay will consider
the following questions:
-How does the metaphor or simile “work” (i.e. what ideas are being compared and why)?
-How does the metaphor or simile relate to other metaphors and similes in the poem (is it different or similar to other metaphors, why or why not)?
-How does the metaphor or simile relate to at least one of the themes of the poem?
In addition, your essay must also perform the basic groundwork of close reading, which is comprised of these details:
-Statement of the title, author and date of poem.
-Summary of the poem’s “action” (i.e. what happens in the poem?)
-Summary of the poet’s tone (happy, sad, angry, ironic)?
-Summary of what you think the poem is about.
