11 May HOW DO SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAMS AND CORRECTIONAL FACILITY MEAL PROGRAMS COMPARE?
Executive
Summary: )
Certain
populations exist where the food they eat every day is chosen for them. Among these special populations include
schools and correctional facilities. The purpose of this report is to gather
information on how school lunches and correctional facility meal programs are
structured and what factors influence them. Then the two programs will be
compared. This report looks at dietary requirements, budgets, federal laws, and
historical influences. Both programs are similar; the programs are structured
around the Dietary Guidelines, the government is involved in each program, and
the budgets are very similar.
Recommendations include having the government stay involved in these
programs, conducting more studies on how feeding inmates proper nutrition can
act as a preventive health care measure, and to keep up with improvement both
programs.
Introduction
Health
and nutrition have become popular topics in recent years. There has been a tremendous
amount of research and changes revolving around the topic of nutrition. Research inclusiveof what we should be eating
to obtain optimal health and the effect of eating habits at different stages of
life. For most people it is their
personal choice of what they eat, but for the people and kids involved in the school lunch program and correctional facility meal
programs food is provided to them without personal choice. Are the kids and adults involved in these two
programs receiving adequate nutrition that is supported by government
advisement? If we were to compare the
findings of dietary requirements, budgets, federal laws, and historical
influences what would we conclude about school lunch programs and correctional
facility meal plans?
The
purpose of this report is to gather information on how school lunches and
correctional facility meal programs are structured and what influences them and
to then to compare the two programs.
Information gathered can help to conclude what research should be
conducted around these two programs and if any changes need implementation.
Research questions for this report include:
How school lunch programs are structured
and what influences them?
How correctional facility meal programs
are structured and what influences them?
How do school lunch programs and
correctional facility meal programs compare?
The
source of research for this report will come from past studies and literature
concerning the dietary requirements, budgets, federal laws, and historical
influences on these two programs.
Conclusion/Recommendations
After
comparing the two programs there are similarities and differences. The programs
are structured around the same nutritional standards and have similar
budgets. Based on the information found
it seems that both programs have improved; they have developed over years with
a requirement to provideproper nutrition to their populations and stay up to
date with new research and public health findings as it relates to the programs.
The
influence of external forces is has really caused the programs to change. Mrs. Obama has helped improve school lunches
with her platform on childhood obesity.
Correctional facilities have started to realize that food can be a big
factor in preventative health and in saving them money with regards to overall
healthcare. I would recommend that more studies
be conducted to research how effective foods can be in regards to preventative
health in correctional facilities. If
there are more credible studies conducted with positive results more
correctional facilities will be willing to start making the changes in making
proper nutrition a priority in correctional facilities.
The government has been a big influence in these programs
over the years. The government has made
it possible for both programs to meet nutritional standards by implementing
laws. I would recommend that the government stay involved within these
programs. Without the governments guidelines and assistance these two programs
would have trouble providing meals that meet nutritional standards and fall
within budget.
One of the biggest influences on school lunch programs in
recent years has been the Health Hunger Free Kids Act. More importantly is the influence Mrs. Obama
had on the creation of this act and her passion towards fighting childhood
obesity and implementing these programs in schools throughout the United
States. With Mrs. Obamas time in the
White House coming to an end I would recommend thatthe federal government make
childhood obesity and school lunch programs a lasting priority. We need to make this topic of lasting
interest and importance to the public so that when Mrs. Obama leaves the White
House these programs are still maintained and work is continued to make these
programs better. A way to keep the
publics interest is to conduct more studies.
Conducting more studies on how proper nutrition has effects on childhood
obesity and impact kids health/school performance will create positive support
and public interest to keep the programs running.
Another
recommendation for school lunch programs is to require the topic of school nutrition be more focused by
individual schools and school districts.
It seems that all schools have been providing the basis of a proper
nutritional program. The implementation
of the Health Hunger Free Kids Act will give us the tools
and experience to keep these programs running.
