AbortionIntroduction and Alignment

Question

AbortionIntroduction and Alignment
In the United States, a decision by the Supreme Court typically puts an issue to rest. Major social changes have been driven by the Court; matters once controversial are now part of our normal social fabric (for example, equal access to education, the right to vote, or protections from discrimination). This has not been the case with abortion. The 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade continues to fuel intense debate and prompt legislative and legal challenges (including by Norma McCorvey, the “Jane Roe” named in that case).

As an extension of reproductive services examined in Workshop Three, the topic of abortion prompts many questions. When does human development begin? When is it okay to abort? What are the ethical arguments for or against abortion? Do women and men have equal rights in deciding whether or not to abort? The core of the Roe v. Wade decision revolved around the constitutional right to privacy. That interpretation leaves many moral, religious, ethical, and biological questions unanswered.

Upon completion of this assignment, you should be able to:

Evaluate the biblical perspective on the beginning of life.

Background Information
Research into Roe v. Wade and abortion reveals a complex mix of science, personal beliefs, and inconsistent or incomplete statutes. Contradictions are countless. The original court decision addressed fetal viability, a concept that is still ill-defined. Many argue for unfettered access to abortion for the entire length of the pregnancy; yet killing a newborn is considered murder. Statutes to mandate standards of care are opposed as efforts to restrict access. Even the terminology used by the various advocacy groups employs intricate emotional and psychological influencers. Consider the term “right to life.” What would be the opposing viewpoint? The “right to death”?

The debate over abortion is intense. It can pit individual beliefs against organizational principles, religious fundamentals against life-changing circumstances, and even father against mother. Understanding the intricacies of this most multifaceted of issues is an obligation of the ethical healthcare administrator.
