In the YouTube video debate about abortion, Lila Rose and Ilyse Hogue, on CNN Crossfire Ilyse Hogue and Lila Rose () airs their different views about the issue of abortion and value of life on Crossfire. On the one hand, Rose argues that women do not need abortion regardless of the trimester and hence should not have to abort to achieve their family or career dreams. She feels that the community should devise means of taking care of single mothers, and improve the adoption system. On the other hand, Hogue believes that abortions are sometimes medically necessary and that the choice to abort should remain with the women involved and the doctors, not with the politicians.
In cases where a woman is pregnant through a violent act such as rape, Rose argues that it is not right to for a woman to use abortion as a means of resolving the issue as it only adds more violence and suffering. She feels that the person culpable for the rape should be the one to face the full wrath of the law and not the innocent baby. In this light, the baby inside the womb should be accorded the necessary human rights and therefore should not be punished for the evils of his or her father. A mother’s right should not, therefore, a baby’s right to life. In rejoinder, Ilyse Hogue asserts that when abortion is outlawed the number of abortion cases increases and so does the number of women dying from abortion-related complications. As such, choosing to outlaw abortion is tantamount to claiming that women’s rights do not matter, women’s mortality do not matter, and so does their health.
As far as contraceptives are concerned, Ilyse being a pro-abortionist claims that they are necessary. In contrast, Lila considers it unfair that it is only women who are in most cases subjected to the contraception that brings about negative side effects on them. In this light, legalizing abortion comes out as beneficial for the proponents as it is in a position of saving the life of a mother where it is deemed medically necessary, and ensure that a woman gets an equal chance as male to accomplish her career and family dream. The risk as spelled out by the opponent comprises of killing and infringing on the life of the unborn baby, and other abortion-related complications.
Anderson Dave in his article “Top 10 Reasons Abortion should be legal” supports Elyse’s claims in asserting that every individual has undeniable and inherent right over his or her body. Hence, the choice is theirs to do whatever they please, abortion included. While Anderson agrees with the pro-life point of view that when women decide to have abortion, they commit the crime of undermining the fetus’s right, he argues that they can only be accorded such right when they are considered viable. And, the only time they can be considered viable is when they are in a position of living outside their mother’s uterus. Anderson continues to criticize the pro-life arguments, claiming that they are usually too focused on the well-being of the fetuses that they place little or no consideration to the life of the mother. In addition, he cites the modern medicine and technology as less risky in the process of carrying out surgical abortion, and hence it becomes safer to abort than to carry the pregnancy to its full term.
Linda Lowen in his article “Pro-life-10 argument against abortion” support’s pro-life arguments by proclaiming that life starts at conception. Zygotes are made of human DNA, as well as other human molecules, making them undeniably human. As such, aborting them is murder as it involves the taking of another human’s life. It is for this reason that no civilized society allows an individual to intentionally take another person’s life or harm them without punishment. Lowen feels that Abortion is no difference and therefore strict laws and rule should be put in place to punish those who engages in such activities. She also believes that adoption is the best alternative to abortion as it accomplishes almost the same results, and with the number or families in the country wanting to adopt increase, nobody should claim that there are unwanted kids.
Abortion affects the health of women more than any other group in a community. While abortions do not necessary affect the chances of women becoming pregnant in future, there could be risks of fertility and pregnancy complications whenever the womb is infected and not treated quickly. Surgical abortions are generally intrusive and can violently interrupt the natural biological processes. As such, women who have an abortion could develop hemorrhage, infections, uterine perforations, cervical damages, retained placental and fetal tissues. In addition to physical health, abortions also have some negative psycho-social consequences on women. Studies show that women who have undergone abortions are more prone to having mental health problems such as anxiety, drug use, suicidal behaviors, and depression.
