Adaptations of Sherlock Holmes
The interest in violin playing is present in many adaptations of Holmes’ adventures. In the original story about the detective, Holmes is described by Watson as a violin player, noting that his skills are “very remarkable, but as eccentric as all his other accomplishments” (Doyle 14). He plays at Watson’s request and can perform rather complicated pieces. However, in his own time, he does not pick up the violin frequently.
The narrator also notes that Holmes’ playing is often linked to his mood. Therefore, some days the music is “fantastic and cheerful” and others it is “sonorous and melancholy” (Doyle 15). In this and other stories, Holmes uses instrument playing as a way to concentrate and think about his cases. In A Study in Scarlet, Watson hears Holmes play to himself, stating that he “knew that he was still pondering over the … problem” (Doyle 44). A violin is not only a hobby but a useful tool which Holmes seems to have mastered reasonably well.
In BBC Sherlock, Holmes’ playing is also connected to his deductive thinking. However, he also uses it to express emotions and taunt his brother. The audience can see Holmes play a melody of his own composing as well as some other famous pieces. For example, in “A Scandal in Belgravia,” Holmes plays the National Anthem of the UK, “God Save The Queen” to end the dialogue with his brother (DeVere). While in this adaptation Holmes remains a skillful player, he also uses the violin as a way to create humorous situations and as a device for non-verbal communication. In a later scene, Holmes plays a Christmas melody for Mrs.
