Please read this material in preparation for a Quiz on Chapter 6.  The quiz will be on April 10.                       

In Chapter 6, Pinn seeks to answer two main questions.  

First, is African American religion concerned with saving souls or changing the social, political and economic arrangements of life for African Americans?  Second, what is the final result of a religious life? (Pinn, 99). These are extremely important questions.  You should be thinking about them and asking whether our leaders in the AA community have done a good job in dealing with these questions.

2. In the period of the Civil Rights Movement (Pinn, 101-109), what new needs arose for African American Communities?  (Pinn, 101-109). (Name at least three of these needs in 3 or 4 sentences).

3. How did African American religious and secular institutions attempt to meet those needs?  (3 sentences).  

4. What are two of the new challenges that emerged after the Civil Rights Movement? (Pinn, 109-112) [3 to 4 sentences].  

After you have taken the quiz, Forum Post 4b will a general discussion on the following  question:

In general, do you think religious institutions should be more interested in:

1.     Spiritual renewal (the saving of souls).  Why?  or

2.     Physical and material freedom (social, political, and economic empowerment). Why? or

3.     Both.  Why?

Whichever option you choose, explain or defend it in three sentences or four sentences.
