This writing assignment helps you move from taking notes to formulating your own argument through the format of a preliminary bibliography, or what researchers call an annotated bibliography. Specifically, as you move further into your research, you might want to synthesize your notes into an annotated bibliography, since it is a list of research sources that provides informational notes about each source and how you might use it as you turn to draft your paper. Composing entries in an annotated bibliography involves much more than merely recording information: it is a way for you to synthesize arguments and add your response to what the source has to say about your research topic. In this document, cite (in MLA format) eight critical works that you will use in your research paper and append below each citation a one to two paragraph (double-spaced) annotation in which you offer a concise but explicit paraphrase of the argument that each critical work puts forth and explain briefly how it relates to your argument in the research paper. Each annotation should be between 200-300 words long.
Considering that you have been given this assignment on the first week of class and must turn it in near the beginning of the fifth week, you need only include four sources for the first draft due on September 12. Moreover, you are not required to state how the argument of the source relates to your own argument in this first draft; you will include this component of the assignment along with the remaining four annotations when you submit your final portfolio at the end of the semester.
