Anova

1 One Way ANOVA – Using Software

Open the dataset FA16STDATA.MTW. These data were collected from a sample of World Campus STAT200 students in Fall 2016. Assume this sample is representative of the population of all World Campus STAT 200 students. We want to know if students who prefer beer, wine, or neither differ in terms of average height.

a. Why is a one-way ANOVA an appropriate statistical procedure for this scenario?

b. Has the assumption of equal variances been met? Show how you checked for this.

c. Construct a side-by-side boxplot comparing the heights of the students who prefer beer, wine, or neither. Copy and paste below!

d. Use the five step hypothesis testing procedure outlined below to determine if there is evidence that the mean height is different for students who prefer beer, wine, or neither.

i. Step 1: Check any necessary assumptions and write null and alternative hypotheses

ii. Step 2: Calculate the test statistic. Include software output!

iii. Step 3: Determine the p-value.

iv. Step 4: Decided between the null and alternative hypotheses.

v. Step 5: State the real world conclusion .

e. Make all possible pairwise comparisons using Tukey’s Honestly Significant Differences Test. Include all output. Which pairs are different?

f. Can we conclude that drink preference causes differences in height? Why or why not?

g. What is one possible confounding variable? Explain why this is a confounding variable.

2 One Way ANOVA – Calculations

In Spring 2016 a representative sample of World Campus STAT 200 students were surveyed and asked if they prefer to watch curling, figure skating, or ice hockey on television in the winter. They were also asked how many hours per week they typically exercise. Use the information given to answer the following questions.

Source SS df MS F p
Between Groups 10.8
Within Groups 12767.8
Total 12778.6

a. Fill in all of the blank cells in the ANOVA source table above . Remember to include all work!

b. Use the five step hypothesis testing procedure following the steps below to determine if there is evidence that the mean number of hours exercised per week is not equal for students who prefer these three winter sports.

i. Step 1: Check any necessary assumptions and write null and alternative hypotheses .

ii. Step 2: Calculate the test statistic .

iii. Step 3: Determine the p-value.

iv. Step 4: Decided between the null and alternative hypotheses .

v. Step 5: State the real world conclusion .
